ALUMINUM SIDING MAKES POPPING SOUNDS IN WINTER Toronto Star: "It's On The House" by Aubrey LeBlanc
A: The siding has probably been nailed on too tightly. It is made with elongated nailing holes (or slots) along the top of each piece. A nail should be placed in the CENTRE of each slot, and driven in LOOSELY so that the siding can slide as it expands and contracts with temperature changes. When hammered down tight, the siding buckles when warm and snaps back when cooled, "oilcanning" or creating a sound like the bottom of an oilcan snapping when it is pressed and released. What to do? As far as I know, the thing to do is loosen the nails, or remove and re-install the siding properly.
