It is advisable to obtain at least two bids (or estimates) for any home improvement or
repair work - especially larger jobs - to be sure the pricing is fair, and at least three
estimates are recommended.
The following costs are intended only as "ballpark" guidelines for repairs
and improvements to a typical three bedroom house. These are average costs, based on
information obtained in the south-central area of Ontario.
When comparing bids, make sure they cover the same work and materials, or that proper
allowance has been made for any differences. The lowest bid isn’t necessarily the
best. Contractors who submit unusually low bids may have made a mistake, or don’t
know enough about the work to estimate it properly.
Our experience has shown that actual contractor quotations can vary by as much as 300%.
